Tropical Heatwave has been in existence since the early 70s in Manchester, England. Those days were especially exciting with a wealth of cabaret, holiday complexes, working mens' clubs and new and challenging opportunities for performances across Europe where the steelpan was a new phenomenon. The band was extremely successful and performed regularly on television throughout the North West. They made recordings on the Bronze label and performed extensively and successfully over a number of years.
In the early 80's, Geddes, the leader of the band, who was employed as a steelpan tutor with Manchester Education Authority, was offered a six-month Arts Council of England bursary in Trinidad to learn the art of tuning steeldrums. On his return he started work in the Arts and Cultural Industries working in community arts administrator and co-ordinatior; as the North West's tour organiser for MAAS (Minorities Arts Advisory Services). His other employment included cultural arts and music research, promotion and development, live music promotions at the famous band on the Wall Jazz Club, Manchester; Carnival Officer and co-ordinator for Manchester Caribbean Carnival; Hillfields Festival Community Carnival, Coventry, and Newtown Carnival Co-ordinator, Bham, where he worked as the Community Arts Officer for The Drum.
Since the early 90s when the band reformed in London with new musicians, they have worked hard over the years to again be regarded as a highly skilled and entertaining Caribbean music ensemble who are regularly invited to perform throughout the UK and across mainland Europe and the Middle East.
The band have received numerous accolades: from private clients, brides and grooms, corporate organisations, festivals, major entertainment event organisers, through to receiving a "Special Invitation" from Prince Charles and Princess Diana to attend Kensington Palace to receive recognition as "ambassadors" for Caribbean music and culture. They also received a prestigious award from the European Carnivals Cities Committee and an entry in The UK's WHO'S WHO OF BLACK HIGH ACHIEVERS.
This is not a group of musicians who are out to "prove" how eclectic they are. Not at all! They are a "typically tropical" crew of artistes who simply want to share the good vibes they set out to create..Check it out !!!
The line up includes musicians and artistes directly from the Caribbean region, with representations from Antigua, St Vincent, Dominica, Guadaloupe, Barbados, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago. Consequently, the music is a highly dynamic melange of styles which, in some cases, have been "tweaked" to give it that unique Tropical Heatwave "twist". In essence, a lovely ensemble to simply listen to or to get down and party with........
This, then, is Tropical Heatwave Steelpan Combo, a hugely delightful and entertaing band which embodies the friendly and accommodating nature of Caribbean people, plus that laid back quality which ensures a cool and chillout vibe with great music and happy times.
